When looking for compatibility from a 2G to a 3G migration, you should look to vendors that are leaders in this space. You may also want to consider a future migration to Long-Term Evolution/4G, even though your migration plans may be a few years out. With that in mind, I would look to a couple of vendors who are very strong in the migration from 2G to 3G and 4G.

Both Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson have a strong presence in the GSM space and both have the products available that should fit within your migration strategy from a 2G to a 3G network. Alcatel-Lucent is one of the leaders in the 2G/3G space and is also building up their presence in the LTE/4G space with equipment in over 50 trails to date and several commitments from network operators to deploy their IP-based LTE solution.

Ericsson is a leader in the GSM space and has recently strengthened its position by buying up Nortel's GSM solution. If LTE/4G is a consideration, Ericsson is ramping up its IP portfolio in this space by using Redback (acquired in December 2006) as its cornerstone in the Evolved Packet Core of the LTE network. Much like Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson has LTE/4G products in trail and has several networks committed to deploy their equipment in 2010 and 2011.
