DEFINITION - Also see content delivery.

For a Web site, to akamaize (pronounced AHK-uh-myez) is to accelerate the delivery of Web files by placing copies on servers closer to the user than the server that delivers the main file for a Web page. To akamaize, a Web site uses the FreeFlow product from Akamai, a company that has managed to persuade a number of its clients and other Web users to adopt the term. Essentially, the FreeFlow process lets a Web site use Akamai's network of dispersed servers as a cache for multimedia and other files that ordinarily slow down the time it takes to download the complete Web page to a user. FreeFlow manages balancing traffic among different servers and identifying the server that should be used for any specific request. Akamaizing is one particular company's approach to what the industry calls content delivery.
